The room was dark, the light switched off. Jason lay on his bed, wrapped tightly in his bedsheet, eyes closed as he tried to fall asleep. Suddenly, he opened his eyes, startled. That same horrible voice, the one he’d heard outside, was now whispering in his room.“Hello, Jason… Are you afraid of me?”A chill ran down his spine. He wanted to turn his head, to move his hands or legs, but he was frozen in place, as if held by an invisible force. He lay there, unable to move, his heart pounding in his chest. Then, the voice came again, sounding like an old woman’s rasp. “Don’t be afraid of me. I’m trying to protect you. I’ve seen your enemy lurking here. He told me he plans to kill you one day. Do you remember a few days ago when you fell from that big tree? You barely escaped with your life.”Jason’s mind raced back to that incident. He remembered the fall and how lucky he’d felt to have only minor scrapes.“I’ve been watching over you since that day,” the voice continued. “I don’t want him to hurt you again. He comes here sometimes, trying to harm you, but I always fight him off. Please, don’t be scared. Be my friend.”Jason lay there, his heart racing, unsure of what to think.
