In the past, long-distance goals like Matt Taylor’s 55-yard volley were a big part of football’s excitement. But things have changed. During the 2006-07 Premier League season, 22.3% of goals were scored from outside the box. By 2023-24, that number had dropped to 12.4%. Across Europe, players now take shots from closer distances because teams focus more on accuracy than flashy goals. This change is due to better analytics, stronger defenses, and a focus on safer scoring chances. While modern football is more efficient, those stunning long-range goals are becoming rare, remembered mostly in old videos and by fans.
