Comb jellies (Mnemiopsis leidyi), some of the oldest animals on Earth, amaze scientists by merging their bodies, nerves, and digestive systems into one. Researchers tested this by putting injured jellies together, and 90% of them successfully fused. Within hours, the fused jellies moved together, shared digestion, and acted as one. This discovery questions how we understand individuality in biology, as comb jellies don’t have the defenses that stop fusion in most animals. These findings could change what we know about evolution, nervous systems, and how animals survive.
